ETIAS: What UK Drivers Need to Know Before Travelling to Europe in 2026

If you’re planning a holiday to France, Spain, Portugal, or other European destinations, there is a new travel authorisation system you need to track: the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). While UK passport holders currently enjoy visa-free travel for short trips, this new system will soon require an online application before you set off.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is not a visa, but a travel authorisation for citizens of visa-exempt countries, including the UK. Much like the US ESTA, it allows authorities to pre-screen travellers.

  • Validity: Once approved, an ETIAS is valid for three years (or until your passport expires).
  • Permitted Stay: It allows for multiple short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
  • The Cost: The fee is expected to be €7 for adults (18–70), while those under 18 or over 70 can apply for free.

The New Timeline: EES and ETIAS

The rollout of these digital systems has been updated. There are two distinct systems UK drivers should be aware of:

  1. The Entry/Exit System (EES) – Launched April 2026
Before ETIAS, the EU will launch the EES. This digital border system will replace traditional passport stamps. It will electronically record your entry and exit at the border, often involving a quick facial and fingerprint scan the first time you cross.
  2. ETIAS – Launching Late 2026
ETIAS is scheduled to follow shortly after the EES is established. It is currently expected to become operational in the last quarter (Q4) of 2026.

Who Needs to Apply?

UK passport holders planning trips to the Schengen Area (which includes popular driving destinations like France, Spain, and Portugal) will need to apply.

How to Apply

When the system opens in late 2026, you will need to apply through the official EU portal. The process is designed to be fast:

  • Information Needed: You’ll provide personal details, passport info, and answer basic security and health questions.
  • Processing Time: Most applications are approved within minutes, though you are advised to apply as soon as your travel plans are confirmed to avoid any rare delays.

Top Tips for UK Drivers

Driving to Europe involves more than just a passport. To ensure a smooth crossing at Dover, Folkestone, or Eurotunnel:

  • Check Passport Validity: Ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining.
  • Monitor the Dates: Keep an eye on official announcements as we approach the late 2026 ETIAS launch.
  • Digital Readiness: Ensure your car insurance, V5C, and Emovis toll tags are ready to go alongside your digital ETIAS.

Final Note

The shift to EES in April 2026 and ETIAS later that year represents a change in how we access the Continent, but it’s designed to make borders more secure and efficient. With a little early preparation, UK drivers can continue to enjoy seamless road trips across Europe.
