Europe Day 2025: Celebrating Unity, Peace, and Cooperation Across the Continent

On Thursday, 9 May 2025, countries across the continent will come together to celebrate Europe Day — a significant occasion that honours the peace, unity, and cooperation established in the wake of the Second World War.

The date marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, delivered on 9 May 1950 by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman. His proposal for a new form of political and economic collaboration in Europe laid the groundwork for what would eventually become the European Union. The declaration aimed to make future conflict between European nations not only unthinkable but materially impossible, by fostering economic interdependence.

A Shared Commitment to Unity

Europe Day provides an opportunity for citizens and institutions alike to reflect on the achievements of European cooperation and to promote a shared sense of identity across national boundaries. It highlights the values at the heart of the EU — peace, solidarity, and respect for diversity — and serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to maintain unity in a rapidly changing world.

In towns and cities across Europe, a variety of events are expected to take place, including cultural festivals, educational exhibitions, open days at EU institutions, and official flag-raising ceremonies. These activities aim to engage citizens in discussions about Europe’s past, present, and future.

How to Take Part

Whether at home or abroad, there are many ways to participate in Europe Day 2025:

  • Visit EU Institutions: Many European institutions, such as the European Parliament and the European Commission, open their doors to the public, offering a unique chance to learn about their roles and responsibilities.

  • Attend Cultural Events: From concerts to exhibitions, Europe Day is marked by a wide range of public events celebrating the continent’s cultural diversity.

  • Join the Conversation: Citizens are encouraged to take part in discussions and forums about the future of the European project and the importance of continued cooperation.

  • Celebrate Europe’s Heritage: Explore the languages, traditions, and histories that contribute to Europe’s rich cultural fabric.
